Lent

Lent

Therefore just as one man’s trespass led to condemnation for all, so one man’s act of righteousness leads to justification and life for all. For just as by the one man’s disobedience the many were made sinners, so by the one man’s obedience the many will be made righteous.
Romans 5:18-19

Friends,

Wednesday, February 26 is Ash Wednesday. This begins the season of Lent.

Every year at this time I share trivial facts about Lent.

The word “lent” comes from an old Germanic language meaning “lengthening of days” probably referring to the days getting longer in spring. (cite Online Etymological Dictionary. Remember daylight savings begins on March 8).

Lent lasts forty days. This does not include Sundays. If one counts forty days without Sundays, one arrives at Easter. Lent ends on Easter.

For the Christian, the number “forty” is significant. Forty symbolizes the number of days Jesus fasted in the wilderness being tempted by Satan.

It is further significant to the Christian as Jesus did not give into temptation.

When Adam and Eve were tempted in the Garden of Eden, they gave into temptation and all of humanity fell into sin. Jesus comes along and does not give into temptation and now many are made righteous.

I hope this helps you understand Lent a little more.

Peace,
